Michiel Mak is the CEO of EMCS Ltd.
EMCS Ltd was established in late 2016.
Michiel Mak has been based in Hong Kong since 2014. He has worked and lived in the Asia Pacific region and in China numerous times from 1998 onwards.
He is able to cut through complexity and ambiguity, grasping the essentials through analytical abilities and deep market understanding. He is able to make difficult decisions, can manage complex partners and resolve conflicts. Through his international experience he is at ease in any culture or environment.
He is a strategic thinker with change management skills and extensive understanding of competitive forces, technology and market opportunities. Through skillful relationship skills, fast decision making, cost management, relentless focus on key issues, strong people skills and effective management of internal and external stakeholders, he has been instrumental in making complex projects work.
Michiel is highly pragmatic and realistic, which proved useful in difficult markets like China. Michiel has extensive knowledge of China, Chinese regulations and Chinese business practices. He has proven experience on how large complex projects and businesses can be successfully developed in China.
Previously, from 2014 to 2016, he was an Executive Director of the Hanas Group, acting as CEO of Hanas LNG. Hanas is privately owned. It is a Chinese company developing, operating and managing clean energy related activities in China (LNG, gas, wind and solar- employing 1500 people).
In 2014, Michiel advised a number of large American PE funds who were pursuing clean energy partnerships in China
Before that period, Michiel worked for Shell. He joined Shell in 1986 after graduating with an economics degree from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He has worked for Shell companies in the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, East Africa, Malaysia and China. Michiel held various senior roles in Trading and Marketing, he was responsible for some of Shell’s major retail activities in Europe and the Far East. He has been in charge of Shell’s global power business and Shell’s LNG business in North America where he gained significant experience in the global power and natural gas markets. He has worked extensively in the areas of Upstream/Midstream technology, LNG, gas, clean energies, renewables, CO2 mitigation, unconventional gas, R&D, technology innovation and deployment.
Michiel is currently a non-executive Board member of Frames B.V. in the Netherlands. Frames is a global technology provider, providing solutions for upstream gas and gas treatment businesses. It is privately owned and Parcom (a leading PE company in the Netherlands) is one of its main shareholders.
Michiel is currently also an Operating Partner for Prostar Capital LLC, a USA based Private Equity active in energy related investments.

EMCS has a large pool of experts available, mainly in Hong Kong, who have detailed knowledge of commercial, financial, legal, regulatory issues in China and the Asia Pacific region. All of them have been working for either NOC’s, SOE’s or Private Energy – Utility companies. They have built up large expertise in relevant business areas and have maintained strong relationships with key players allowing them to have up to date and relevant information.
